This historical fiction is based on the tragic real life of Anne Ngono. Barely sixty years after the death of this strong-willed princess, history has forgotten her. She was the daughter of the German Major, Hans Dominik, and Manga Ewengué Marie, the nkukumé [queen] of the Sanaga people in Central Cameroon. As a Commander of the Yaoundé Station, and an architect of colonial ‘pacification’, Dominik’s name remains forever associated with violence and cruelty in that country where he raged from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
“The book Ngono Anne… a unique story of a very determined woman. I have been curious as to the lead up to independence from colonial rule in African nations. This book gives an idea of the conditions (and injustices) prevalent in Cameroon from the perspective of the indigenous peoples and how they began to imagine change… and especially an appreciation of their traditional ways that needed to be affirmed.”
